Dear R.I.M’s Blackberry
Much time has gone by since we parted ways. I won’t lie and say I don’t miss your superior messaging or e-mail experience. Lest not forget your amazing battery life either, others counted in hours, yours in days. The problem was I couldn’t continue to spin those positives into the faces of friends and family when your negatives are so overwhelming.
The first problem is a lack of an identity. You want to be an enterprise workhorse for one group and a media center for another. The former you do well in and any businessman (or businesswoman) would do well to have you yet multimedia is not your strong suit. The videos I took with you were washed out, lacked contrast and looked like trash on any screen other than your own. The photos I took with you weren’t much better.
Web browsing was a lesson in tolerance and I’m putting it nicely. Your native browser was a joke and only when I used something else could I get a glimpse of what web surfing on the go could be like. This brings me to another area you need vast improvement, functionality extension. I remember App World…I remember not using it. At the time I had you in my hands, App World was just a sapling and I didn’t expect it to bear much fruit. Presently, through word of mouth, I hear it is still struggling to grow whereas the “others” have hundreds of thousands of apps.
You can’t expect developers to develop for you when no one wants to use you. The lack of innovation is evident. Only up to recently did you try to make amends with the Bold 9930 but you still have far to go until I will consider coming back to you. Yes, I have contemplated coming back with the release of the Bold 9930, but I am holding out for BBX (your new OS). If it offers your expertise in security with powerful hardware, and the ability to use apps from one of the “others” market place, you may have a chance with me again. Until then, I have another taking care of my needs and wants…something you currently can’t do.
