I know there are other carriers that offer a similar type of service (T-Mobile has myFaves and Alltel has My Circle), but until you realize the magnitude of this feature, you won’t understand how this will turn the wireless industry on its head. For years, I knew the wireless industry was heading down the road of inexpensive unlimited plans and we are one step closer to that realization. Some of you may say that Boost Mobile (now owned by Sprint) offers $50 unlimited plans with no contracts, but as I said before about the other wireless carriers and their not so unlimited plans, there are limitations and exclusions to the plan. First of all, most of the phones you can use with Boost Mobile suck, plain and simple. Second, there are reports of text messaging lag, some customers wouldn’t receive a text message for up to six hours or their sent text messages wouldn’t be received by the recipient for hours (Editor’s Note: Sprint has stated they have worked out the problems associated with the text messaging lag). Third, certain plan features on the phones cost extra, like GPS which are included for free on my plan. Last, Boost Mobile isn’t offered everywhere.
For $58, I got unlimited everything except for the 450 anytime minutes limitation. Couple that with the Any Mobile, Anytime plan feature and you have an amazing plan not offered by any other company. Another thing I may add is that I’m currently not locked into a contract any longer since a year ago, so I get the best of both worlds. I can see this plan addition as a way for Sprint to stop the customer bleeding and bring in new customers.
In my opinion, Sprint only needs to do two more things and they will topple the competition. Sprint needs to battle with the other carriers with their selection of phones. Verizon has or will have every phone Sprint carries but not vice versa. As a Blackberry fan, I applaud Sprint for getting the Tour, but there are many exclusive phones that the other wireless carriers have and I believe that is the major reason why so many Sprint customers are leaving them. I can see that Sprint is going down a different route than the other carriers. Knowing that they can’t really compete with the phones, they are providing the best yet cheapest plans in the market. AT&T and Verizon are in a tight battle over the selection of their phones and I think Sprint needs to enter that battle.
The last thing is about Sprint’s massively improved customer service and how they should advertise it more. I cannot count how many times I’ve spoken to a Sprint customer service rep and got the help I needed. If I had any questions about billing or service, the CS rep would go beyond the call to satisfy my needs. After each call with a CS rep, a couple days down the road I would get a follow-up call. This wasn’t a “how did we do survey” call, this was a genuine follow-up by the same rep who wanted to make sure my problems were solved. I’m not even going to go into the details on the amount of monthly credits and free minutes I have received over the past year. I feel like Sprint really wants my business.
Sprint’s progression from a company with horrible phone and customer service to, in my opinion, a leader in innovative plans, services and now customer service is nearing completion. They have learned that retaining customers is as important as signing up new ones. Their wireless plans have no equal [yet] and with more resources aimed at securing exclusive phones, they can be on top of their game. Do you use Sprint or another wireless carrier?
